We are having a nor’easter (which has nothing to do with Easter) here in NH today, and what could be more perfect after an afternoon of sledding, than a warm cup of creamy hot chocolate. This recipe is not your typical hot chocolate that you get using the box with the big eared rabbit, this is rich and chocolaty with just a hint of orange and cinnamon.
- 4 cups milk (I used 1%, but I imagine it would be even better to use whole milk)
- 1/4 cup good quality unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1/2 ounce of a dark chocolate bar, chopped or broken into pieces (or any kind of chocolate you have in the house. I only had a 1/2 ounce because I had already eaten the rest. You could probably add up to an ounce for a creamier drink.)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/8 tsp orange extract (if you don’t enjoy orange flavored chocolate, leave this out)
- dash of cinnamon
Heat the milk in a pan over medium heat. Add cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and chocolate bar. Whisk until everything is dissolved. Continue to heat until milk is hot, but not boiling. Remove from heat and add extracts and a dash of cinnamon.
Serve in mugs with marshmallows and sit by a warm fire to watch the snow fall and try not to think about having to shovel it all later.
