Best Buttercream Frosting Ever

This makes about 4 cups of the very best sweet and fluffy frosting.


  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup nonhydrogenated shortening
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3-4 Tbsp milk


In the bowl of a mixer, beat the butter, shortening, and salt.

Add the sugar and beat on medium for 2 minutes.

Add the vanilla and 3 Tbsp of the milk. Beat for 5 minutes. If the frosting seems stiff add another Tbsp of milk and then beat for a few more minutes. Frosting should be fluffy.

Caramel Frosting Variation:

Before adding the milk, add 1/4-1/2 cup caramel sauce depending on your love of caramel. (I used just under 1/2 cup). Reduce vanilla to 1 tsp. Reduce milk to 2 Tbsp.

Note: I used Ghirardelli Premium Caramel Sauce
